Exploring the Ancient
Civilisation of the Picenes

The network of Picene Museums

The ancient origins of the municipality of Servigliano go back to the Picenes and the Etruscans who in this place wanted to raise a city, but it was to be the Romans who in the 1st century B.C. built their villas here, precisely in the place where now the Angela Garden B&B stands.

ARCHAEOLOGY

Picenes People of Europe

The Picenes, known also as Picentes, represent an ancient Italic ethnic group active between the 9th and the 3rd century B.C. Their land stretched between the rivers Foglia and Aterno, from the western Apennines to the eastern Adriatic coasts, including the modern region of the Marches and the northern part of Abruzzo.

According to the legend of the ethnogenesis, the Picenes originated from a sacred source in the high Sabine area and spread along the Adriatic coast under the guide of the totem of the woodpecker.

This mythological connection is reflected in the emblem of the Marches, where the green woodpecker was adopted as a symbol. The archaeological remains conserved in the Picene museums and in the archaeological museum of the Marches in Ancona, tell us of a mysterious and very rich people, made up of brave warriors, able tradesmen, Amazons and female priests.
